Sebring Golf Club
History
The Sebring Golf Club is located in the City of Sebring in Highlands County. In 1924, the City of Sebring appropriated funds to build a municipal golf course and selected 160 acres on the south side of Lake Jackson.
The contract to build the golf course was awarded to A.D. Taylor, a city planner and landscape architect from Cleveland, Ohio. Taylor hired golf course architect William Herbert “Bert” Way of the Mayfield Country Club of Cleveland, Ohio to layout the course. Way arrived in Sebring in January 1925 and was pleased with the lay of the land and felt that the City was wise to build nine holes first. Way was no stranger to Sebring. He had stayed at the Kenilworth Inn two years prior while recovering from an illness. Way purchased two lakefront lots in 1925 while in town laying out the course. At some point during that year, the City ended its contract with A.D. Taylor and hired Sam Degering to complete construction of the golf course.
On Thursday, February 18, 1926, Sebring Mayor William Parrish hit the first ball to officially open the golf course. The new course opened with grass greens and was listed as 3,200 yards long. Three years later, in January 1929, the full 18 hole course opened. Several hundred people were in attended the opening and played the new layout. The completed 18 hole course had a par of 72 and stretched out to 6,357 yards, which is longer than playing from the current back (blue) tees today. Throughout the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, the neighboring hotel, Harder Hall, paid the City of Sebring an annual lease so that their guest could utilize the golf course.
Today
The 18-hole, par-72 Sebring Golf Course features four sets of tees playing from 4,800 to 6,200 yards. In the style of an older, traditional Florida golf course, Sebring offers a relaxing, enjoyable round of golf for players of all skill levels. Sebring Golf Course ranks as the cornerstone of the city's recreational amenities, known around town as "The Muni." The Muni also welcomes and encourages walkers.
Local Knowledge
The golf course features several dog-leg holes but none more severe that the 2nd hole. Dating back to the original routing, the par-4 hole turns nearly 90 degrees, and plays from 245 to 308 yards, tempting golfers to cut the corner.
