Lake Worth Beach Golf Club
History
The Lake Worth Beach Golf Club is located in the City of Lake Worth in Palm Beach County.
In 1923, the City of Lake Worth approved a proposition to build a municipal golf course along the City’s lakefront. The golf course architectural firm of Langford and Moreau was hired to design an 18-hole golf course. Their design had 13 holes laid out north of Lake Avenue with the remaining holes south of the road. Plans included dredging the bottom of Lake Worth to fill in a considerable portion along the lake front. A year later, a permit to fill part of the lakefront was received from the U.S. War Department for the construction of the golf course.
Early in 1925, Captain H.H.C. Tippett, a golf architect from Miami, was awarded the contract to supervise the construction and all architectural work on the golf course. Nine holes were officially opened on November 11, 1926, at a cost of the $400,000. During the opening ceremony, Lake Worth’s Mayor A.D. Clark, presented the keys to the clubhouse to Cameron Trent, the golf professional. After the ceremony an amateur golf tournament was held and, in the afternoon, an exhibition match was played between local golf professionals. Rates for the golf course were $1 per day or $15 for the month.
In the early 1940s, plans for enlarging the golf course were launched by city commissioner Charles Davis. After two years of construction, the completed 18-hole golf course was opened for play On November 6, 1948. Designed by golf course architect Dick Wilson, the existing nine holes were completely redesigned, and he added nine more. Mayor J.T Barton hit the first tee shot on the sporty new course that was 5,808 yards long and had a par of 68.
Today
The Lake Worth Beach Golf Club includes an 18-hole, par-71 golf course featuring five sets of tees playing from 4,100 to 6,000 yards. The course is comprised of a unique old Florida design along 1.2 miles of the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s vintage South Palm Beach charm comes from the mature Banyan and other indigenous trees with interesting doglegs and very player friendly design.
Local Knowledge
The construction of the golf course was an engineering feat. The contract for the 400,000 cubic yards of fill on the lake front was awarded to Waldeck-Deal Dredging company of Miami at 24.4 cents a cubic yard.
A 1926 newspaper report claimed that “golfers will soon replace boats,” in recognition that almost all of the golf course land was once at the bottom of Lake Worth.
