Mount Dora Golf Club

History

Mount Dora Golf Club is located in the City of Mount Dora in Lake County.

In July 1945, the newly formed Mount Dora Golf Club announced that it had 44 chartered members, $5,050 in the bank, and plans to build a 9-hole golf course. The city agreed to lease property along the Orange County line to the golf club.

The course design was prepared by Clifford L Deming, golf architect and engineer from Cleveland , Ohio who was a winter resident of Mount Dora for many years. Mr. Willard Wadsworth. President of the golf club was in charge of the construction. By December 1945 , two fairways were already cleared and dirt for the greens and tees had been pushed into place.

The course was laid out so that you could play three, six or nine holes and always end up near the first tee. This was meant to accommodate the golfer who did not have a lot of time for a complete round.

On December 15th, 1946, the first ball was hit by Willard Wadsworth, President of the Mount Dora Golf Club. Reportedly, the city gave the new golf course an unused traffic kiosk for their first pro shop. The course was also known as the Hilltop Golf Course during the 1950s.

By 1958, work began on expanding the course to 18 holes. Harold Paddock, a nationally known golf course architect who was a member of the club, planned the new nine holes. Paddock was reported to have designed nearly 150 courses during his career. He also owned the Aurora Country Club in Ohio, where Stan Kuznik the Mount Dora professional would work during the summers. The complete 18-hole golf course was finished in 1959.
