New Smyrna Golf Club

History

New Smyrna Golf Club is located in the City of New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County.

A citizen’s golf committee was appointed by the mayor of New Smyrna Beach in 1945. They were tasked with finding a site to build a municipal golf course. The committee had contacted several golf course builders including Donald Ross. The City’s former golf course was destroyed when the Navy took over and enlarged the Municipal Airport during the early 1940s.

In 1947, a site owned by the Indian River Plantation group was selected. The City acquired the services of James B. McGovern, a longtime design associate of Donald Ross, to produce a topographic survey of the property. Soon after, the city drew up a $3,500 contract with the firm of Donald J. Ross for the architectural design of the golf course.

In June 1948, the city attorney prepared a resolution entitled “A Resolution Providing for the Sale of the Property Known as the Lovejoy Golf Course Tract, the Proceeds from Which ad to be Used for the Construction of a Golf Course.” It passed unanimously. That same year, F.L, Edwards submitted a bid of $54,00 for the construction of a 13-hole golf course and was awarded the contract. Work began early in 1949 on the golf course while the city continued to acquire additional funds to complete the remaining five holes.

The New Smyrna Beach Golf and Country Club was formally opened and dedicated on March 18, 1950. The celebration began with a parade down Canal Street then an exhibition golf match between Pug Allen of Deland and Archie Bagwell of Daytona Beach against Jack McClaren and Johnny Freitas. Following the golf match, the dedication ceremonies took place then the course was opened for public play and ended the day with a fish fry. The course was leased to Harald Ridgely for five years. Ridgely also served as the golf pro at the course.

Construction of the remaining five holes began in early 1956 and was completed the following year giving New Smyrna Beach its complete 18-hole golf course. Golf course architect Bobby Weed completed an extensive renovation of the golf course in 2006.
